Sunbeams

Hello everyone, this is Mattie!

I just wanted to share a quote with you that I’ve had hanging up on my bookshelf for a few years. It’s from The Twits by Roald Dahl.

“If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly, You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out-teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

– Roald Dahl

Regardless of what Roald Dahl meant by “good thoughts”, what I think of is Ephesians 4:8:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praisworthy–think about such things.

Whether you’re conventionally beautiful or not, when you have the love of God in you, when you think these “good thoughts”, no one can help but notice your true beauty. We live in a world of outward appearance and facade. It’s time for us to realize that real beauty, truth, loveliness, etc., comes from someone far greater than ourselves, and it’s time to share it with love and kindness.

So, let us shine like sunbeams, and be lights in this dark world!

    Very well said!!! I just love this quote and your thoughts make it all the better!! Thank you so much for sharing from your heart and speaking truth…….the longer I live the more I see how our thoughts really do affect how we react and how we live. I sure needed this reminder today. I love how he says that “one who thinks good thoughts can never be ugly”! I also really like when you said “let us shine like sunbeams, and be lights in this dark world”! Our world definitely needs the light in us, from God, to shine brightly!! I love you, Mom
