Jan/Feb – Things We Enjoyed
Hi, everyone!
For today’s post we wanted to share some of the things that we really liked and enjoyed during the months of January and February! We’re currently planning to make this a segment of sorts on our blog, but we’ll just have to see how it goes. π These things aren’t necessarily themed to the months or anything, but just the highlights of January and February that we thought would be worth sharing!

Mattie:
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Salt to the Sea is a story about four refugees trying to board the ship the Wilhelm Gustloff in order to escape the invading Russian Army in Germany at the end of World War II. Though the characters of this story are fictional, the events and the Wilhelm Gustloff were real. Though it is a tragedy, it is a tragedy that must be remembered. This is a World War II historical fiction, so of course it is sad and there is some content and a little language, but otherwise, it is a lovely book. I read this book super quickly, and I hope you like it if you read it!
Amelia:
The Borrowers Afield by Mary Norton
Though I read book two of the Borrowers series this month, I would definitely recommend what I’ve read of the series so far! If you like entertaining children’s books, this is definitely the perfect one to read. I’m not sure if everyone knows the story of the Borrowers or not, but, if you don’t, it is about a very tiny family who lives in the floor of a house and the adventures that they have!

Banana Oatmeal Cookies with Chocolate Chips – Well Plated
These are a great choice if you are wanting a healthier option, but still something yummy! We have made these quite a few times this year, and they are super easy! We like to add a few spoonfuls of peanut butter to the batter, but you can really add whatever you want to this recipe and they will still be good! We also don’t follow Well Plated’s directions for refrigeration – we’ve never refrigerated them and they always turn out fine.
Find the recipe here.

A Swingin’ Safari by Bert Kaempfert – 1962
A few days ago I (Amelia) walked in and saw that my dad was VERY excited about some music that he was listening to. When he was a really little kid, this was his favorite album, and he has apparently been searching for this album for years. Thanks to some Spotify searches, he was able to find it, so of course we were listening to it on full-blast throughout the entire house. This is really great background music for really doing anything. This music is fun and happy, and puts you in a great mood! We’ve listened to it while driving in the car and while baking! My dad’s favorite song was That Happy Feeling, and some of our favorites are A Swingin’ Safari, Market Day, and Skokiaan.

The Library
Of course, as book lovers, we love the library, but since the lockdown, we haven’t been able to browse in many libraries. There’s been one that we’ve been able to go into, but it doesn’t have a very big selection, so we were very excited to see that there’s one other library around our area that you can browse in! We had a lot of fun going there, as well as got a lot of books π
That’s about it for the summary of what we’ve been enjoying lately. We’d love to hear anything that has been a highlight during the first months of 2021 in your life! Thanks for reading! π

Great post! I always enjoy seeing what you recommend and trying new things. I recently found the tv/movie series called Signed Sealed and Delivered and like that it has thought provoking and encouraging messages. I also have discovered that I enjoy getting outdoors more in the winter now that I am learning to snowshoe! Great exercise and a chance to be outdoors and enjoy all the differences that winter brings.

Thanks for commenting! π I’m glad that you found a show that you like. I’ll have to send it to my penpals since it’s about a post office XD I noticed that you’ve also been enjoying watercolor, lately π When it gets to be warmer maybe we could all go paint some nature scenes outside together!
