Each Small Commitment

Hello, everyone!

This is Amelia writing today.

With NanoWrimo upon us, I thought that it would be a great time to bring up the topic of commitment.

For those who may not know, NanoWrimo is a time when many writers set out to write 50,000 words in thirty days. This is my first time to participate in it, and I am realizing just how much of a commitment it is!

In this post, I’d like to talk a little bit about what commitment means, an example of commitment, and what comes from our commitments.

Commitment means a dedication to a cause, even when that cause gets long and unappealing.

One example that comes to mind when speaking about commitment is The Lord of the Rings. What makes this series such a beloved classic? For me, one thing that makes the trilogy so appealing is the commitment. Frodo is dedicated to taking the ring to Mordor, and the fellowship is dedicated to helping him. Maybe because the characters were so committed to their cause, we feel committed to it as well.

Why is commitment so appealing in fiction? Maybe the answer lies partly in how we were created. Everyone was created to be committed to something bigger than ourselves. To long for a commitment with God, to be dedicated to loving Him. And, maybe, seeing commitment throughout history and literature reminds us of what we were made for and what we were made to do.

Galatians 6:9 says,

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

We were made to commit ourselves to a cause and to stick with it to the end, so that, one day, we will be rewarded for continuing to pursue goodness until the very end.

Our biggest commitment is serving God. But, maybe, having those smaller commitments can help us. Maybe they help us practice that big commitment, because the big commitment doesn’t seem so vast when it is taken one day at a time.

We can care about any cause, anyone, and anything, but when we truly commit ourselves to it is when we reap the harvest and bear the fruit.

We were created to be fully committed to our Creator, and, in turn, to love because of how committed He is to us.
