A Little Progress Goes a Long Way

Hello everyone! Mattie writing today.
I wanted to share a little about something I’ve been doing recently. For the past few months, I have been trying hard to turn two things I want to do into habits.

The first is writing. While it may seem strange because I write on this blog, writing has never really been my thing. Sometimes I enjoy it, other times it seems like pulling teeth would be easier than trying to put my thoughts on a page.

But ever since I participated in NaNoWriMo with Amelia last year, it made me realize I wanted to write, or at least wanted to want to write. Even though I failed miserably at NaNoWriMo, it planted a small seed of a habit. For the past seven years, I have written in my little book a little every few months, but since the beginning of the year I have sat down to write at least twice a week.

The second habit is exercise. I am a very lazy person, and I really don’t like exercise for the sake of exercise. It just isn’t fun. But recently Amelia and I have been challenging ourselves to exercise and workout together. While it’s definitely not a habit yet, it’s a start. And when I look back to a year ago, or even just a few months, I realize that I would never have exercised voluntarily.

While neither of these habits is life-changing, the progress I have made on these small things encourages me and helps me see that change is possible, it just takes a little work. Change is hard for me. I like to stay the same, even if it’s not for the best. So, if you’re like me and might think that changing for the better is too hard or an impossibility, I hope that my small improvements will encourage you to try something you thought you would never be able to accomplish!

Thanks for reading!

Consistent baby steps are the way to go when you want to build a habit! I even like to make my quiet time something that’s simple enough that I can be consistent with it and make it a habit that’s just built into my schedule. Also, this is making me want to make the same habit of sitting down and writing which I have not done in a long, long time.

Yes! That is a great idea. I definitely need to do that, too! Sometimes I think I make things too complicated, when really all I need to do is sit down and do it! Thanks for commenting!

Aw, nice! Its great that you’re starting to build these habits more! I am as well – to make them more regular in my schedule – so we’re in a similar season of life!
